Choose a Yoga Class That Works For You ... Don't Follow Fashion or Fads!

Yoga is a very personal discipline. Just because a particular method is suitable for one person, doesn't mean it's suitable for another ... find YOUR PARTICULAR STYLE and you'll find a Yoga Class that suits you.

I can empathize as finding the right yoga class for some people can be quite a struggle.

An acquaintance of mine has been going to different yoga classes for nearly 10 years now. She has followed one fad after the next, never giving any particular style sufficient perseverance to say that she'd gotten a handle on it, but chopping and changing yoga styles constantly with whatever yoga style was in public fashion.

Now that's the wrong way to choose a yoga class!

It has only been within the last eight months that she's found a yoga center that works for her. Admittedly eight months is the longest time she's ever tried any particular style, and I think that this is part of the key. She is starting to understand the basics of this particular yoga class and thereby enhancing her enjoyment.

She's tried every style, and every school of yoga that there is – at least every school of yoga that she knows about and which has been publicly advertised.

She's tried Bikram yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Kundalini, Iyengar – basically every type that is taught in this country, but there have been no yoga teachers that she's met who have met her needs. This one recently appears to satisfy her and that's great. Now don't get me wrong, she has loved some of her yoga teachers as well as many of the yoga classes she's attended, but none of them took an approach that really met all of her needs.... And that's what going to a yoga class is all about.

You need to find which yoga class works for you ... what satisfies your needs, emotionally, physically and mentally.

There is no formula to this and no one person can tell you which yoga class you're likely to enjoy more than another ... you just need to try them yourself.

Taking a yoga class is a deeply personal experience. For some people, the right yoga Center is easy to find. All they need in a yoga class is a place to go exercise, and so they do not have to look very hard to find one.

For others, however, especially those of us who want to go deeply into the practice of yoga, finding the perfect yoga class is much more difficult.

Yoga is a very subjective discipline! What makes a good yoga teacher for one person does not necessarily make a good yoga teacher for another.

Some people prefer a teacher with a very hands-off approach, while others like one who is very actively involved. Some people like a yoga class with lot of personal attention, while others like one where they are free to delve into the practice almost alone.

Some people like an upbeat yoga class with lots of energy, while others like a slower more sedate one. It all depends on you, and the only way to find out is through trial and error.

So get out to the yoga classes and give them a go.

My only request is that you try the different styles for longer than two weeks before you make your mind up whether you like it or not. Sure, there are going to be times where you just don't bond with the yoga teacher ... but that shouldn't be indicative of whether the style is good or bad for you.

If you need to try several types of yoga before you decide which style of yoga class suits you best, then at least do them justice by trying each style for some 4 to 6 months each, so that you start to get an understanding about what each yoga class is trying to teach you.

It may also be the case that a yoga class is not what you need at all and doesn't suit your personality. If so, don't force it. Find a form of exercise or relaxation that you enjoy.

I have actually loved yoga for a good long time,  but for some people tai chi, pilates or the martial arts are more their style.

Some people just do not do well with the long, sustained poses that a yoga class requires. If you do not have the attention span for this, then try something more active like a martial arts class. There is no right way or wrong way. It all comes down to personal choice.
