The practice of 'yoga', doesn't matter under which stream it falls, provides a holistic approach to life which will eliminate or at the very least reduce the stress in your life!

It's best to consider the benefit of yoga in the broad concept of what it can do for those practicing it.

The practice of the asanas has been refined over centuries to bring the student of yoga into a state of mental and physical wellness ...

I believe that the spiritual side (whatever that may mean to you) flows as a consequence.

The combination of the yoga postures, yogic breathing and subsequent meditation help to balance different portions of the body, such as your digestive system, the endocrinal system (in other words your glandular system) and your nervous system.

By doing the yoga positions and synchronizing your breath to assist your practice you're slowing your mind and focusing,... your massaging and subsequently stretching your internal organs and releasing the tensions in your muscles.

In doing this you're reaching an 'active peacefulness'.

Haven't you found that by concentrating fully on the execution of the positions and the synchronization of the breath, you remove your thoughts from what stressed you during the day and for that period of time you exist in the moment and allow yourself to rejuvenate!

If you practice yoga on a regular basis and practice taking yourself into that relaxed state of mind, then you will be able to bring that relaxed state of mind, more and more into your daily life.

Practicing yoga either in a class, through books, videos or DVD's should be one of the major goals in life!

When you consider all the ailments that stress cause, it should be one of your primary goals to lead as stress free a life as you possibly can ...

now I know you're thinking ....

'yeah right, you've got no idea'

but the amount or type of stress in your life does not preclude you doing all you can to reduce the stress or its negative health effects ... does it?

Now the practicing of the asanas helps to guide you to 'active peacefulness' but meditation ... now that really assists with stress relief!

Through meditation you focus the mind ... whether it's on a word, an image of comfort or on your own breathing ... it's what works for you! While in that meditative state the hormones in your body which relate to stress decrease. The act of meditating is both an active and a passive act. Although you're suspended in that passive state, as if observing your body from through a window, you're actively bringing your mind back to your chosen focal point.

If you practice this regularly you will find that your thoughts will become clearer, what was turmoil before will be calm, it will relieve those chronic stress related pains and headaches and relax the mind allowing you to rejuvenate!

The ultimate upside of this is that your mental health and physical vitality improve. Although it is a very subjective concept, many people who practice yoga over a regular period of time have found that their attitude to life changes, in that it becomes more positive, vital and full of energy!

I find Kacy's view interesting as it is a far more conservative approach.

I advocate that a health body will give a healthy mind. I firmly believe that people can combat the effects of stress with exercise like yoga.

I think that reaching for a pill to provide a 'quick fix' is not always the best answer. Yes, granted ...sometimes it wont be able to be avoided but I believe that it is better all round to attempt to heal oneself through a holistic approach ...
