Yoga clothing must not only be fashionable but functional!

What yoga clothing you choose is not just a consideration for those new to yoga but to those already practicing yoga as well!

The individual yoga postures are challenging enough without you worrying whether your t-shirt is just about to fall over your head in the downward dog! ... Nor whether there's enough stretch in your trousers to get through crow pose (Kakasana).

So you need to find yoga clothes that are comfortable, non restricting and practical.

The form or type of yoga apparel follows what you use it for. So form should follow functionality! Therefore the tops must cover you completely, without restriction yet still be good looking. Your choice in pants must be non restrictive around hips or waist and provide sufficient flexibility and freedom of movement.

Different Types Of Yoga Apparel

Contributed by: Mike Mann

Yoga is all in rage lately. Everyday, a number of people decide to engage in Yoga for the conveniences it brings, from the physical aspect down to the spiritual and mental health.

Doesn't matter what yoga clothes you choose, they must be comfortable and fit!

Various forms of Yoga correspond to different people of different walks of like, ages and lifestyles. Yoga is open to all who can accommodate it. And one can perform or do Yoga as often as he wishes without restriction. The effects and benefits are seen as time goes by and it is not surprising that many people are inclined to it.

Yoga includes equipments, clothes, accessories as well as facilities to initiate learning. So how are you going to get up and choose what you wear on Yoga activities?

Yoga clothes should always be inclined to giving the best comfort. Although there are no particular Yoga clothes or apparel that you are supposed to wear during or when performing Yoga, it is necessary that you are comfortable with what you wear. You don't want the yoga pants to be too baggy, ... do you? Better to wear fitting capri yoga pants for instance. I find brands such as nike or prana yoga pants or yoga wear,  just as an example, fit comfortably and don't ride up when doing inverted positions for instance!

A man's yoga pants needs to be comfortable and allow for maximum movement without being baggy - male yoga students tell me varying things, but most say that cotton pants for yoga are the best!

So try and make up your own mind!

However, there are some considerations when choosing your Yoga clothes.

First and foremost is comfort.

Since you are going to perform different positions or Yoga postures, you must wear yoga clothing that will not restrict you from moving freely in any manner. Your clothes should offer ease of movement and must be attuned to letting your different body parts twist and stretch in various ways and postures.

It is advisable to choose clothing which is made from pure organic cotton because this will provide maximum comfort.

(I know I have said that I prefer cotton clothing as well but there are some great high tech fabrics on the market that give you the feel of cotton but with the strength, durability and performance benefits of advanced fiber technology. They are fully breathable, they resist moisture and odor entrapment, and keep you comfortable and dry. The one I'm thinking of particularly is Supplex®. ...author's insert)

 With this kind of material, the body is allowed to breathe as it should be. In addition, the clothing you choose must be sweat absorbent so that you will not feel sticky and moist when you sweat during the activity.

Although there are far more attractive and appealing designs of yoga clothing that you can choose from, always keep in mind to consider the clothing that fits you right and that fits your body frame.

Next consideration is the expense.

When you buy your Yoga clothes, you should not give in to the extremely soaring prices despite its fashionable design or style. You should be practical enough so that you may invest your money on some other things rather than just a piece of Yoga pants.

Why buy expensive designer Yoga clothes when you can buy a fashionable one at half the price?

It is important that you purchase the apparel that looks attractive yet packed with comfort and a fitting price. Moreover, it is better that you purchase the clothes which can be worn even without a Yoga class or session.

Multi-functionality is stressed here because it makes great savings and looks good to wear as well. It will be impractical if you buy that one which lacks functionality and dynamism. It is better to buy those which you can wear even on regular days.

(For instance, there are so many different types of yoga pants on the market, that sometimes it's difficult to choose! Naturally you can get cheap yoga pants, there are prana yoga pants, nike yoga pants, specially petite yoga pants ... on the other hand there are also 'tall' yoga pants. So there is a huge range to choose from ... author's insert)

There is much Yoga clothing which are not only good looking but also has a unique look when worn outside of class. It is quite annoying to have bought Yoga clothes which shrink or change its shape after being washed in a washing machine.

Avoid buying these because it would only give you a headache. Try to choose those clothes made from organic materials and those that do not change shape easily.

It is also advised that you wear a good sports bra since this will help you a lot during your Yoga class. This will provide support and therefore, must be comfortable and appropriate.

Just finishing off with what I think, the clothes you wear during your yoga practice, whether you're male or female should be:

  • first and foremost, comfortable and sufficiently form fitting that you're not constantly adjusting t-shirts flipping over your head and exposing you from your middle to your throat in inverted poses;
  • You want shorts that don't gap at the legs. Actually shorts or form fitting yoga pants are great as you can better see the alignment of your knees, ankles and feet;
  • You should choose yoga clothes that absorb sweat, so that you don't feel sticky and moist during your practice;
  • I choose yoga apparel that is appealing and makes me feel good;
  • Now, having a large bust I do wear a sports bra or sports crop top underneath;
  • Men if you're conscious that your shorts keep slipping up, what my yoga teacher does when he's not in men's Capri's is to wear cycle shorts under his shorts;
  • Yoga is traditionally done barefoot, however if you suffer from cold feet you can get some great yoga socks which have some rubber on the base for traction;
  • Lastly, but definitely not least, often the yoga apparel I choose serves multiple functions as I use it as casual and general sports wear. They often look tremendous to wear outside class

So ultimately what Yoga apparel is all about is looking good and feeling good. The perfect balance of mind, body and spirit!
