Hot Yoga - Vinyasa yoga ... are the practices interchangeable or are they totally different practices altogether?

Let me give you an idea of where Vinyasa yoga came from.

The word "vinyasa" has several meanings. In sanskrit, its most common meaning or the way its most popularly used is to describe a 'specific linking sequence' of poses that are drawn together with breath. Often it's based on the sun salutations ... chaturanga 'up dog/down dog' that gets you from one pose to the other.

As the practice of the positions is timed to flow with the breath, rather than just be a series of distinct poses, the concept of 'flow' yoga developed.

The idea behind the sequencing of vinyasa yoga is to  bring a sense of balance and order between "ease (sukha) and effort (sthira) while synchronizing the movement with the breath". It is a combination of Krishnamacharya's style of Ashtanga yoga, Iyengar form of yoga and Viniyoga. .... what a mix but it does the trick!

So is there a difference between vinyasa yoga and ashtanga?

Ashtanga is the traditional form of yoga from which other styles of 'flow' practice have come from. Ashtanga yoga is taught as a specific system with the poses in a particular order.

So if  you're attempting to master one of the six series of the ashtanga systems, the sequences are the same whether you're doing it here, in Washington or in Mysore, India.

Vinyasa yoga has 'flowed' from Ashtanga but has perhaps more latitude in its practice

The specific vinyasa yoga form comes from the Ashtanga style of yoga ... as I mentioned, ... think the linking pose of chaturanga - up dog/downward dog together with the challenging practice of co -coordinating breath (ujjayi pranayama) with movement. Some classical hatha style yoga classes use the sun salutations but generally only in the warm up, whereas in a vinyasa style of yoga class the 'flow' continues right throughout the class.

So how does Vinyasa Yoga connect with Hot Yoga?

Hot Yoga classes often offer Vinyasa style yoga ... not only does the style of yoga heat you, as each yoga posture is challenging but often the rooms in which the yoga class is held are heated.

But not all vinyasa yoga can be seen as 'hot' yoga.

There are those studios that believe that the body generates sufficient heat from the practice of vinyasa yoga that you don't need a heated room in which to practice!

Each yoga position in vinyasa yoga is designed with the idea to prepare the body for the next position, the positions are not done in isolation.

Often the room is heated to around 97 degrees, but it depends on the individual studio, could be more could be less.

By itself, this style of yoga heats the body, but if the room is also heated ... phew ... you drip of sweat.

The reasons they heat the room are several ... and it really is a matter of personal preference whether one wants to practice yoga in this type of atmosphere, ... but the extra heat does help the muscles warm enabling you to go deeper into the poses. The heat also stimulates the glandular system and helps to eliminate toxins.
